I will gradually increase this list as time goes on and I get the time; I have loads of free essential software programs I would like to share, so check back.
AVG Free Virus Program.
An excellent virus program from Grisoft. The free versions is for home use, and I have found to to be a very competent and easy to use program. Symantec Anti Virus can be a little in your face, always bugging you with pop ups and slow scan speeds. AVG however just sits in your icon bar at the bottom right and quietly monitors for virus. It has an auto update features which updates daily – this can be a little annoying as it always updates when you start your computer up for the first time, just as your down to the last few seconds to bid on that eBay auction. However you can change the update schedule to prevent this. Click the AVG logo which I have linked to the free download page. Make you you stick with the free version for now. Hope you like it.
Trend House Call – Anti Spam & Anti -Virus.
Trend house call is an online virus and adware scanner that will crawl your computer for all sorts of nasties It is extremely thorough, yet can be time consuming. Depending on the size of your hard drive and the speed of your internet connection, a typical full system scan will take 20 mins, so you might want to go off and let it run while you do something else. The Trend virus products, like AVG are excellent. Trend has some very nice adware and spam filtering software, however it can be a little expensive. I usually run the House Call once a month to check my system out, and 9 out of 10 times it finds something.
Ad-Aware Anti-Spyware.
Ad aware provides protection about spyware that can get on your computer just through browsing and accepting cookies. If you haven’t run a spyware scan on your system, you will be very surprised when you run Ad-Aware who has been watching your internet activities. Ad aware has a free edition as well as more advanced commercial editions, however I have always found the free edition to be very useful and highly recommend it. It was however a bit of an effort to try and locate the free edition as the site funnels you to the trial version. Yet the link provided will take you to the Cnet page where you can download the free edition without any leg work.

ISO Recorder.
ISO recorder is a great free tool by Alex Feinman that can burn discs in just a few clicks. Once it is installed it resides in your right click (sort of). Put a Disc in your drive, right click, choose create disc image and its off and running. Super easy very quick, nice and stable. Highly recommended by Me, Easy CD, Nero and many other companies around the world. ISO recorder is an excellent disc backup and clone program. Download it here.
Internet TV.
With faster and faster internet speeds becoming available Internet TV is really starting to make some head way. A few years ago internet TV was very jumpy, images / media screen were small and bandwidth appalling; however now there are HD channels, widescreen channels so much has improved. There are literally thousands and thousands of internet TV stations out there, and to be honest most are rubbish, but the big guns are also out there, like CNN, CBA, Fox, Comedy Channel, Sci-Fi all sorts of News and Business channels and many movie channels. You just need to know where to look. Although most of these sites are free, if you are going to watch a bit of internet TV it is handy to get a program that roles all the channels into an easy to use interface. It will save you so much time. I will be doing a detailed post about internet TV shortly so stay tuned. In the meantime you can find out more here.
